SEX SAFETY: THE TRUE RISKS OF GETTING AIDS

Risk of acquiring AIDS from one course of penis-vagina intercourse with someone:

 with condom

 without condom

Of unknown AIDS status who isn't in a high risk group:

 1 in 50 million

 1 in 5 million

Of unknown AIDS status who is in a high risk group:

 1 in 100,000 to
1 in 10,000*

 1 in 10,000 to
1 in 1,000*

Of unknown AIDS status who has tested negative for AIDS but continues to engage in high-risk behavior (needle sharing or sexual intercourse with a member of a high risk group:

 1 in 500,000

 1 in 50,000

Of unknown AIDS status who has tested positive for AIDS:

 1 in 5,000

 1 in 500

With one exception-anal intercourse-other kinds of sexual activities carry much less risk. The above odds worsen with repeated heterosexual intercourse. After 500 times with someone who tests positive and doesn't use a condom, for example, the chance of being infected is two in three.

* These odds vary because of differing rates of infection among high-risk groups.
